I love this. As a hat-wearer myself, I have faced questions from those who didn’t get me or the hat I was wearing. The face-value-book-by-its-cover judgements remind me that it’s easy for us (me, included) to let my cognitive miser have it’s way - even when it shouldn’t. If I’m feeling disconnected from my more empathetic self, I wear a hat and watch those around me react/notice/not-notice and remember that “The tension between appearing to belong and actually understanding what it means…” is at the heart of human sociality.
